The UCLA Intervention Program provides diagnostic and intervention services as well as after-school programs in an enriched educational setting to children starting at birth. The highly trained staff help the children live positively with their developmental challenges and disabilities during the early formative years. Through the use of specially adapted toys, computers, software programs, and equipment, the children learn the joy of success and independence in preparation for a productive life. The program staff place a special emphasis on assisting parents in planning for the unique needs of their child and in helping the family address the needs of all family members.
The UCLA Intervention Program’s team of professionals meets daily to review and assess the educational plans for each child. The staff’s expertise is used to bring to life each child’s educational plan in the classroom by providing materials and activities that will promote and motivate learning.
Intervention Program Services
Infant Services: 0-18 months, one hour sessions.
Toddler Classes: 18-36 months.
Morning classes are available.
Special Needs After-
School Program: Monday through Friday from 12:30-5:30 p.m.
All of these services provide an environment that attends equally to the children’s physical social, emotional, and cognitive development. The activities are designed to invite the children to experiment and create play that can be both individually- and group-focused.
The staff guide and, at times, model the play activities. They assist the children by enhancing their skills, by nurturing their self-esteem, and by providing them with a touchstone from which the children can unfold and explore the world. In this safe place, these special children develop a joy and delight with the possibilities of life.
A Special Needs After-School Program is available for children enrolled in the UCLA Intervention Program as well as children from the community. The purpose of this program is to extend the learning day for the child and to provide the parents with additional support. The staff incorporates each child’s IFSP or IEP goals into the after-school activities. These organized educational activities allow each child additional time to achieve his or her goals.
“Polliwog” Pool Play Program: The UCLA Intervention Program’s services are enhanced by the “Polliwog” Pool Play Program. In the one-hour weekly “Polliwog” session, each child is accompanied by a parent during the water play and socialization activities that take place in the therapeutic pool setting. The “Polliwog” activities provide children with opportunities to experience independent freedom of movement.
Through the Computer Project, staff use specially-designed computer software programs, to assist the children’s learning. The computers are utilized daily in all classrooms and are one of the children’s favorite learning centers. In addition, a computer and software loan program is available to enrolled families.
The staff at the UCLA Intervention Program are professionals who meet or exceed the qualifications required by the State of California, Department of Children’s Services and professional licensing requirements. The UCLA Intervention Program’s philosophy is developed within the context of the guidelines suggested by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
The UCLA Intervention Program is licensed by the State of California and operated by the Developmental Studies Program, Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA.
